Woodworking as a Hobby

Woodworking is a popular past time for many people. The latest survey estimates over 18 million people are engaged in this vocation, either as a profession, or as a hobby.
While the majority of them are males, there are many female woodworkers, who almost seem to possess a mysterious connection to fine design and quality of work.

Woodworking is a skill that can be learned by everyone, through the many books and magazines dedicated solely to this subject. While these publications inform the reader of the techniques involved in this craft, they can’t relay the hand / eye co-ordination required, or the “feel” involved in using the tools. This can only be learned by actually using the tools and equipment required to participate in this activity.

Practicing proper use of tools will lead to a better understanding of the properties of the materials involved, as well as the relationship of the tools with the materials. This understanding is essential to successful projects. Therefore, as with everything else, practice is essential.

Apprenticeships in years gone by consisted of having an apprentice perform the same task repeatedly, until the “master” felt that the student learned not only the knowledge involved, but the “feel” of tools interacting with the materials. This same learning technique is still the best way to master the skills involved. These skills can be practiced on scraps of wood, prior to attempting them on an actual project.

Woodworking is typically accomplished with a combination of hand tools and machinery. While some of these machines can amount to a pretty substantial investment, often a lesser cost hand tool can be used in their stead. This will equate to a higher level of labor, but will produce fine results.

There are many woodworking clubs, schools and classes sponsored at local retail tool stores, which will allow use of their machinery, thereby reducing the need to purchase the larger machines. This is a good approach, as in addition to saving money, they will teach proper use and safety.

There is much information available, regarding which tools to buy, and in what order to buy them, but it is important to buy quality tools and machines. Often a person gives up in frustration, when the real problem is poor equipment that even in professional hands would lead to disappointing results.

There are a number of multi purpose machines on the market, such as Shopsmith, that are high in quality, and will perform the same functions as multiple, single purpose, or dedicated, machinery. They have the added advantage of allowing a complete shop to be set up in a small space. The down side to these machines is that they require some setup time when switching between accessories, and in general can’t compete with the power and speed of independent commercial quality machines. Still, they are quite capable of producing work of the highest quality.

Many professional cabinet / furniture shops started out as a hobby for the owner of the shop. This is often the case, particularly for smaller shops. Eventually he / she got enough work to sustain turning it into a business.

While the subject of cabinet or furniture making can seem intimidating, it is not out of realm of most people, who are willing to practice and read articles in areas of particular interest.

It is a hobby that can provide a very rewarding and gratifying way of escaping the stresses of everyday life, and who knows, it could turn into a business for you as well!

Digital Cameras For Beginners

Photography has become a favourite hobby for many people today. Decades back it was considered as an expensive vocation but now the situation is different. Due to changes in the technology, the cameras and the process of photography have undergone thorough changes. Conventional cameras are now replaced by digital cameras. Unlike the conventional cameras, digital ones have no films. Images will be captured on photosensitive chips. Photos will be visible immediately on the screen. The advantage is that images can be deleted if not satisfactory. Otherwise they can be loaded into a computer in order to take prints or to post it in the internet.

Popularity enjoyed by the photography as a hobby or profession has attracted many to this highly technical vocation. The newcomers search for a suitable camera to begin with. But it is a very confusing or difficult job. Many of the terms or technical jargons associated with the art of photography are not easily perceivable. The beginners should therefore exercise caution while choosing the right camera. In this era of digital camera, selection of a suitable one requires expert guidance. There are many websites to render valuable tips to those who shop for digital cameras. The meaning and significance of important terms usually associated with digital cameras are explained in simple language by experts. The websites impart lessons on the subject which are easily comprehensible even to lay persons.

It is very important to understand the terms like pixels, Aspect Ratio, Digital Zoom, Optical Zoom etc. as they are vital factors to decide type or quality of a digital camera. For example pixel is a term which is mentioned in the context of a digital camera feature. The consumer need not struggle to learn the technicality of the term, but it is to be understood that it represents the size of good quality print that can be taken out from the image shot.

A 3 mega pixel camera can yield excellent quality prints of 4 inches x 6 inches sizes whereas a 5 MP camera can yield high quality prints of 8 inches x 10 inches sizes. Optical zoom and digital zoom are entirely different features. Optical zoom manipulate the focal length of the lens to enable perfect focus. The digital zoom may be termed as a mechanism by which an image will be compressed or enlarged in size according to the photographers options. Similarly aspect ratio is the ratio of length and breadth of the image. Aspect ratio will be indicated as 3:2 or 4:3 etc in digital cameras.

The purpose of perusing special websites dealing exclusively with digital cameras is to understand the working of camera and to learn how to make best use of it. Experience is the best teacher. Initially it is better for a beginner to choose a cheap digital camera. Some of the cheap cameras will have only basic features. But they are easier to use. A compact digital camera is ideal which can be carried wherever we go. Features like automatic focus and view finders can be chosen. Compact digital SLR camera is also a better alternative even though it is slightly expensive.

A shopper should go through the unbiased reviews by experts which are posted in the special websites. Camera is a personal possession of the devout photographer. It is also a long term companion. As such care and caution should be scrupulously exercised before buying it.

What’s In A Calling?

My son-in-law is a very impressive guy. He’s a decorated Lt. Col. in the Marines. Imagine how tough you have to be, to be a Marine… much less earning such a high rank at a young age. When we first met I asked why he joined the corps. Without hesitation he answered, “It’s a calling.”

Wow. Not a job, or career, but a calling. How fortunate to do something you love and were meant to do. And, how fortunate for the rest of us that young men and women hear that calling and rise to the occasion.

But, what about other ways to make a living?

A friend spoke of a friend of hers passing and the fact she had worked 55 years at the same fast food restaurant. For someone like me that’s moved 22 times and lived all over the country from Virginia, Miami, Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, Orlando, Chicago, Los Angeles, and North Carolina, the idea of one place, much less, one job for 55 years is puzzling. So, while pondering how someone enjoys 55 years of, “You want fries with that?”, a concept came to mind.

In the Nightingale Conant program, “Dream Job,” the author Dan Miller gives a great overview of what a calling is.

He states the difference between Vocation, Career, and Job.

While on the surface these three words seem to mean the same, they are quite different. Vocation carries the biggest meaning. Translated from Latin the core meaning is to call- therefore, the calling. This is the purpose, the nagging inner desire, the big plan. There can be many careers used to support this calling. For example, a person that is called to be a healer may be a doctor, and the many specialties involved, or a nurse. And, there can be many job descriptions that work to satisfy a higher calling such as an orderly. So, the task of changing beds and bed pans may be a means to fulfill that higher purpose. That position of orderly may only look like a job, but it may be the engine that drives a vocation.

Back to our fast food lady, the person who worked for over five decades everyday at the same counter handing out trays of soft drinks, fries, and sandwiches, was she just doing a job? Or was she motivated by a higher calling to serve others happily, or maybe something greater, to send her kids to college, pay off a mortgage, enjoy the American dream. We don’t know her higher calling. People may not know your calling by seeing the uniform of your job.

Whether you wear a coat and tie, or shorts driving a brown truck, no one knows your vocation. But, you do. Is your daily routine one of the many gears turning to answer your calling? Or, is it really just a job.

The Secret of Concentration

They are indeed wise, who know that the secret of success is concentration. To think that it is only the Yogis who need concentration is a gross mistake. Concentration is essential for every person whatever his vocation may be. It is seen that concentration is inherently developed in artisans like blacksmiths, barbers, carpenters, goldsmiths and weavers. If the blacksmith misses his mark while striking with the hammer, even slightly, there is the possibility of crushing his hand. If the barber’s razor slips, there is the possible danger of a cut in the skin and blood oozing out. If the carpenter does not have a good hold on his chisel, he will lose his toe. The work of a goldsmith is undoubtedly very dextrous.

Weavers can produce clothes of good quality only if they care to keep their eyes fixed on the looms. But none of these people practiced concentration after reading a book or listening to a lecture. The situation created by the demands of their professions has forced the cultivation of concentration in them. What could be that situation? It is the risk of a disaster occurring with the slightest error in their handiworks. All of the above-mentioned are on the brink of danger while they work. Hence they have to work very diligently and attentively, restraining their minds. Thereby they would have obtained a form of concentration related to their own occupations. Not only this, there are innumerable examples wherein this type of concentration can be traced to have been passed down the generations. For instance, among apprentices learning smithy in I.T.I.s it is seen that a boy from a blacksmith’s family excels in the art.

This applies equally to all other vocations. It is rather rare that one possesses skill in a new craft. Based on the preceding observations, we come to know the fact that concentration is achieved by continuous striving. This was Lord Krishna’s answer to Arjuna’s question too: practice results in perfection. And you might have heard “practice makes man perfect” – What was Arjuna’s query?

“Krishna, the mind is very fickle; it is endlessly restless. It is powerful too. To keep it under control is equivalent to capturing the wind. How then can such a fickle mind be brought under control? Lord Krishna replies: “what you say is true, Arjuna. It is a fact that the mind is restless. It is true that keep it under control is no easy task. But listen to this-important-revelation:

It is equally true that even such a fickle mind can be brought under control by the force of CONSTANT PRACTICE and detachment. Arjuna’s question is quite natural and equally simple is Lord Krishna’s answer. The problem of the mind’s restiveness is not a new thing; it is as old as man himself. However, owing to the immoral and undisciplined mode of life prevalent today, it might have increased by a certain degree. In fact, Arjuna was a man of courage and righteousness. If such a man’s mind could be erratic, what to speak of the unsteadiness of mind of today’s pleasure-seeking and indulgent humanity.

Those who are bent upon bringing the mind under control must, first and foremost, clearly understand the nature of the mind they wish to fight with. The mind is as restless as a monkey and as strong as an intoxicated elephant. Controlling it, as said by Arjuna, is trapping like the wind. In regulating the mind, one needs the skill that is necessary in catching monkeys and training elephants.

When Arjuna complained that controlling the mind was very difficult, Lord Krishna did not make light of it and say, “For one like you, who has subdued the most heroic warriors, of what difficulty is the task of mastering the mind which is, after all, your own? You must be able to handle it as you like”. But instead, understanding the gravity of the problem he says sympathetically. “What you say is true Arjuna”. That mind is fickle and that, regulating it is very tough, are both true”. The reason Lord Krishna saying thus is that he knew the nature of the mind.

Every animal and thing on earth has a distinct disposition to blow is the nature of the wind
To burn is the nature of the fire
To flow is the nature of the water, likewise
To poke its nose everywhere
To jump about madly
To desire whimsically
To think about thousands things at a time
To fret over a boast of worries
To build castles in the air
To bother about every simple reason and every other work than the one assigned, is the nature of the mind.

With surroundings tending to provoke the mind which is by nature restless, what can one do, other than dancing to its tune? Therefore those who wish to control their minds should keep away from distracting environment. This does not mean that we have to leave the city, but only the mind should not be allowed to mingle with the surroundings. How is this done? Here the role of the five sense organs comes into picture.
Eyes
Ears
Nose
Tongue
Skin.

These are called as the vehicles of the mind. Their nature is as follows
Eyes – to see
Ears – to hear
Nose- to smell
Tongue- to taste
Skin- to feel

No sooner the eyes sees something beautiful than the mind leaps straight into it. Thus the senses keep pulling the mind in all directions. Hence it is required to keep the senses under control by applying the intellect. This implies, not seeing what should not be seen; not eating what should not be eaten; not doing what should not be done. Doing thus is called “Dama” in Sanskrit. The mind can flow wherever it likes, independently also, without the help of the sense-organs. In such cases the mind should be brought back with the application of intelligence. This direct method of keeping the mind poised is called “Shama” in Sanskrit. After coming to know so many details about mind and its concentration, some may ask, “After all what is the need to keep the mind under control? A correct answer to this must be known. The answer is just this: if one’s mind is under one’s own control, great goals can be achieved through it, while if it is not, it becomes well very difficult to do even the simplest tasks. Truly the mind is endowed with tremendous, demoniacal strength. That is why swami Vivekananda said, “strength is Life, and Weakness is Death”.

Yet many seem to be weak mentally at times or all through their lives. The reason is their mental energies have been dissipated indiscriminately. Not all are aware that the Sun’s rays have the power to ignite fire. Why don’t they know? The reason is, they would not have seen the sun’s rays creating fire and burning down things. But when the same rays are passed through a convex lens or magnifying glass in a concentrated way and made to fall on a piece of paper, they can burn the paper. How did the rays acquire this power? It was the result of making then converges, and thereby, “concentrated”. Earlier they were scattered in different directions. Hence, even though they could produce heat, they could not burn. But after becoming concentrated they could produce blazing fire. This is a secret. There lies remarkable power in our minds, intrinsically. Since this energy is being spent on all kinds of necessary and unnecessary matters, we are incapable of doing anything other than only the most commonplace things. If great things are to be achieved, then the distracted energies of the mind should be channalised. This can be done only when our mind are under own control.

But how can be the mind called ours if it madly runs out, unheedingly? The mind that has drowned itself in sensual things, accepting the invitation of the sense organs, is definitely not our own. How can we make a mind that is not ours, work as we want?

The first thing that our sages of yore achieved through constant efforts was mental equilibrium by bringing the mind under their control. And when such a mind was made to concentrate, it enabled them to find out the grandest yogi secrets. It brought them nothing less than Divine knowledge. As swami Vivekananda puts it “A concentrated mind is really a search-light. A search light makes it possible for us to see even the objects lying in distant, dark corner. Well it is true that the mind has to be made to concentrate but what should be the object of concentration? It is not possible to give a specific answer, suitable to all people, and at the same time; because, saying that the mind should be concentrated upon the light of the Atman would be absurd since not all have ventured to become yogis. Nor can it be said that the mind should be concentrated upon God because, not everybody is a devotee. How about saying that the mind should be concentrated upon lessons? But then, not all are kid or school-going students. So, it would be most appropriate to say that each individual has to personally choose his own particular object of concentration. But here we shall discuss how students must concentrate their minds upon studies.

Make Every Effort!

James Thurber, I believe, is the one who quipped, “It is better to have loafed and lost than never to have loafed at all.”

When I read Paul’s exhortation in Ephesians 4, all I can think is that the Church better quit loafing before all is lost. Read these verses carefully and see if you can spot Paul’s main point. What is it he wants from us? (Look carefully — it may be tricky! Even Peter said Paul’s writings were easily misunderstood!)

Eph. 4.1-6 — I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, with all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, Who is above all, and through all, and in you all. [Emphasis mine]

There’s none so blind as he who will not see? There are some who can read the above verses and still not see Paul’s main point — blindingly obvious as it is:

Paul orders us to be one.

Paul orders us to be one.

Paul orders us to be one.

Paul orders us to be one.

Paul orders us to be one.

God orders us to be one.

Recently I came across a statement by J. I. Packer that it’s about time for Christians who believe in the fundamental truths of Scripture to come together for fellowship and witness regardless of denominational identity. All he’s saying is what we already quoted above from Paul in his letter to the Ephesian Christians.

There, in chapter four, in the first verse, Paul “beseeches” or “begs” us to walk worthy of the “vocation” to which we are called. (Whenever I preach on this I have to make sure people read “vocation” here, not “vacation”.)

God has not called us Christians to a vacation — some “groovy Jesus trip”. He’s called us to work. A “vocation” is a career, someone’s long-term, regular occupation. If a person pumps gas for a summer that’s a job; if they buy the station and pump gas the rest of their life that’s their vocation.

But if every Believer in Jesus Christ has been divinely enlisted to go to work, just what is that work? Let’s look at some of the job description Paul throws in here: this vocation requires humility and gentleness towards others, being slow in receiving offense from others and able to hold up under the pressure of other people…

But what’s the vocation to which all Believers in Jesus Christ have been called?

Love. To live and walk with others in love. And in so doing, to build up the Body of Christ into full stature!

That’s not so easy. What’s easy is getting mad at everyone we’ve got to live around. It’s easy to see how other people who consider themselves “Christians” are really just phonies. It’s easy being offended at how Pastor handles a problem in the church. It’s easy getting angry (especially self-righteously angry) when someone else in the church comes against our favorite person or program.

How true it is that it’s hard to soar like eagles when you live with a bunch of turkeys.

I remember hearing of an old southern preacher who was a bit hard of hearing. He was hobbling with his cane down the sidewalk until at the corner he turned and entered the crosswalk on his way over to the general store. A teenager, speeding through town, saw him and hardly slowed as he whipped around the corner and came within a hair’s breadth of running the old minister down — just grazing past so the fellow fell backwards into the muddy street. The car sped out of town as the old preacher held his cane high, shaking it and screaming, “You blasted kids! You blankity-blank morons! Don’t you know I’m a man of God!”

Doesn’t the world know by now that we’re “men and women of God”?

How long’s it going to take before they realize that we Christians — Children of the Most High God — reflect in our daily lives the Savior of this World, the Conqueror of Evil, the Shepherd of Love?

It won’t take long — as soon as we start doing it. As soon as we get to work and get our vocation out of the mud. After all, it isn’t as if Paul’s command here is complicated: “Endeavor to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”

I remember hearing another translation which says, “Make every effort to keep the unity in the bond of peace.” The New English Bible says we’re to “spare no effort”.” Make every effort” doesn’t guarantee success. Some brothers and sisters simply won’t obey God and cooperate. But if there’s any lack, let it be on the part of another and not myself. Meanwhile, I’ll “make every effort…”

In his book, Expository Reflections on the Letter to the Ephesians (p.115), Leon Morris comments on verse three, “keep the unity”:

Paul now turns to the importance of Christian unity (v. 3). This is not the achievement of believers; it is something that is done for them by Christ. They are not commanded to bring this unity about, for Christ has done this. They are to “keep” it, that is, to ensure that it continues. That believers are to bear with one another surely implies that sometimes they will not see eye to eye and that one believer will think that another is in error. Though among other [secular] groups that might be thought cause for quarrels, that is not the way Christians should behave. When we consider the grievous quarrels believers have had with one another through the centuries, it is clear that some of us have given insufficient attention to the apostle’s injunction. But whatever mistakes believers have made, that is no cause for us to forsake the command Paul gives. Unity among believers is of first importance and we are to show diligence in maintaining it. There may be occasions when we cannot succeed, but that should never be our fault. We should all put forth our best effort and be diligent to maintain unity.

I am not denying that sometimes the differences between believers have been so strong that schism was the necessary result. Nor am I denying that in the modern church it is sometimes necessary for a strong stand to be made in the face of firm opposition from other believers. But I am saying that nothing gives us license to ignore the apostle’s direction. Whatever be the case with other people, and no matter where there are divergent opinion, nothing gives us license to cease to act in love or to let unity slip away.

So, what must we do?

Make every effort!

Reinvent Yourself in a New Career

Some people reserve the word “vocation” for religious calling. Contemporary career guides encourage us to think of a “life purpose” that guides and gives meaning to a life, regardless of career. See, for example, Mark Albion’s book, Making a Life, Making a Living.

Many people speak of being “called” to a career. There is a sense of “inevitability,” that, “I was meant to do this.” Some say, “This feels right.”

Self-help books, career coaches and counselors are available to help people who want to discover their sense of purpose. In reality, all any of us can do is stir the pot: create an environment where vocation can be discovered and grown.

The push for reinvention can come from yourself or from external forces.

It can be more difficult to deal with losing a much-loved career that gave meaning to a life. Sometimes the vocation can be taken away when a job is lost or a market disappears.

Often, however, people feel no external push out the door. They just realize, sadly, that they no longer love what they are dong. Or they no longer believe their work has value. And, they ask, what next?

Reinvention does not follow burnout.

Losing a vocation is not the same as “burning out.” Burnout, a well-defined psychological condition, results when people feel they are giving more to their work than they are getting back. They begin to see clients as ungrateful and undeserving.

Burnout requires healing: deeper personal relationships, creativity, and time off. A lost vocation cannot be healed. It may return in a different form but people must recognize that it is a real loss that will be grieved.

Four steps to find your way forward

You probably can’t go home again, but here are some ways to go forward.

First, create your own way to say good-by to your former life. Not everyone experiences severe grief symptoms — sleeplessness, self-destructive actions, loss of appetite — but if you do, see a licensed therapist or grief counselor.

Second, begin to introduce new actions and activities into your life. In the early stages, do not worry about finding a new vocation. Just begin to act. You may want to keep a journal or embark on a creativity program, such as The Artist’s Way. You may enter a temporary setting, such as the Peace Corps or a university degree program.

Third, honor what you lost. A part of you will always reside there. A dancer-turned-business-student uses the discipline or dance to excel in her studies. A teacher-turned-flight attendant can handle restless passengers.

Fourth, realize you have a wonderful gift: the capacity to find meaning in life and work. Begin working towards a new future, realizing that one day you will be caught up in a new adventure.

Your new vocation will come as a surprise, perhaps when you give up looking. It won’t be the same but you will feel rewarded, happy, fulfilled and stronger.

I offer one-to-one consultations on career strategy.

Why Technical Analysis is So Important to the Short Term Trader

Trading for short term profits is a profession, not unlike owning a small business. It requires dedication and a commitment to discipline just as any vocation on the professional level demands. What sets this kind of trading apart from a traditional small business is the freedom provided once the trader becomes successful. However, every year many turn to the equity markets with dreams of taking huge profits using trading methods such as day trading, swing trading or scalp trading. Unfortunately, these methods of trading require skill levels that cannot be obtained overnight.

These methods of trading primarily rely on technical analysis rather than a fundamental approach used by long term investors. Investors traditionally only consider individual companies or stocks and possibly one general sector as whole and whether it is in favor or ignored by Wall Street. This is generally the extent of a long term investor’s “technical analysis” with all other research being the financial health of individual companies.

Shorter term traders, on the other hand, usually could care less about the fundamentals of a company since short term trading by definition means the trader will not be invested in the company long enough to matter fundamentally, anyway. The only concern the short term trader has is what technical analysis tells him about the stock on that day and at the most, a couple of weeks.

Chart patterns, overbought-oversold conditions, uptrend or downtrend, support and resistance, these are just a sample of the terminology the short term trader lives by. In order to be successful with short term methods and profiting in the equity markets, the trader must gain the necessary knowledge and acquire the skill level needed to compete and win. Technical analysis requires an the ability to interpret stock charts, proficiency in understanding indicators and oscillators as well as an understanding of market internals.

Understanding Your Vocation

A person can be driven by what they do for a living. They may strive for excellence, rise to the uppermost echelon of monetary success, find adulation, status, honor and praise in what they do and yet in spite of all, feel a sense of emptiness and lack of fulfillment. They are not unlike children who on Christmas morning play with the shiny new toy, but soon discard it to play with the empty box in which the toy came. We look for work that we feel will “make us worthwhile”, that “has importance” or will grant us some sort of satisfaction.

I am blessed to have been an ordained minister and licensed life insurance agent for nearly the same amount of time. I first became a licensed life agent in July of 1986. One year later, I was officially licensed as a minister in the Church of God (Anderson, IN). Throughout, I have come to see that the two jobs are amazingly similar, with negative stereotypes and caricatures that most people are pleased to use as points of humor or insult until the time that one, the other or both are needed.

In the beginning, both the minister and the life agent are seen as a sort of necessary evil; the people that you need to see as little as possible as you make your way through life. Couples may look for a minister to marry them without allowing that same minster to give counsel to them on the stresses of marriage, just for conveniences sake. Then the same couple will look for some kind of life insurance “just in case” something bad happens to one of them.

Many people don’t want to see either until the time that a crisis has already occurred, and then for as little time as possible.

But often it is both the minister and the life insurance agent that bring the most comfort in the midst of the greatest tragedy. For the believer, the minister brings assurance that this world is not all there is, that their loved one is no longer subject to the toils and pain of this world. For the beneficiary, the agent brings the material provision that the policyholder planned to give to the family themselves had they lived long enough to complete their plans, but loved enough to provide “just in case”.

From the loss of my mother at age 14, to the death of a close friend a short time ago and many relatives and friends in between, I have seen what great good ministers do for and in a family during trying times. Fewer times have I seen life agents perform what they are called to by delivering a death claim. And I have delivered those claims myself.

It was at those times that I came to understand the importance of seeing the true value in what you do, not just as a living, but as a part of who you are.

In this year of the 500th anniversary of his birth I have come to agree with John Calvin’s assertion that, to paraphrase his words, “So each individual has his own kind of life assigned to him by the Lord as a sort of guide so that they may not blindly wander throughout life” (Institutes, III.10.6).
